scrictly referred to as “ye”

[edit]

ye recently exclaimed only being called “ye” and that the name “kanye west” was a slave name. my thinking is that spotify and apple music are gonna refer to him as ye now instead of kanye west which brings up the question wether or not the article name should be called “Ye (musician)” or something like that instead of “Kanye West” Purpetic (talk) 20:11, 23 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

We'll see. See WP:CRYSTAL. – Muboshgu (talk) 20:24, 23 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
He should be referred to as Ye, 100%. Just have Kanye West redirect to Ye. If we would change the name of a transgender individual to their preferred name I see no reason why the same can’t happen with Ye. Maninacoffin (talk) 02:48, 15 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Purpetic and Muboshgu: I've noticed that Ye's artist moniker on platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube is still Kanye West, and his latest 2024 albums were released as Kanye West. So Ye is his legal name and Kanye West is still is artist moniker? Israell (talk) 18:14, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

That would suggest that "Kanye West" remains is WP:COMMONNAME. – Muboshgu (talk) 19:23, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ye should be referred to as "Ye". i've read through the talkpage archives and the arguments used to prevent moving this to its correct title are unpersuasive, especially WP:DEADNAME. the policy in the black community is that one should not "call someone out of their name", and i don't see any real reason to leave this page at its current title, but that's just my two cents. i will likely make a move request unless anyone can provide a persuasive reason to leave it at this title. Daddyelectrolux (talk) 20:52, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Daddyelectrolux, considering that there have been four unsuccessful requested moves within the past three years, each with essentially the same rationale, such a request could be viewed as disruptive. I don't see WP:DEADNAME used as an argument in the discussions but rather WP:COMMONNAME, which dictates that Wikipedia use the name that is most commonly used (as determined by its prevalence in a significant majority of independent, reliable, English-language sources) for the article title. That is policy. Unless you intend to refute that "Kanye West" is his COMMONNAME per that policy, the chances of a successful move appear slim. Throast {{ping}} me! consensus can change, and three years is a long time. Daddyelectrolux (talk) 05:38, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wait, maybe refer kanye west as Ye for when he is referenced in times after he changed his name Tulurm (talk) 06:54, 21 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Where does it say to do that in wikipedia policy? 183.177.48.166 (talk) 03:36, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ye is way more than just a "rapper"

[edit]

"One of the most prominent figures in hip hop" this is not correct it should look more like this "One of the most prominent and influential figures in modern popular music" 87.116.182.147 (talk) 10:19, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Then find reliable sources that state this. This isn't a place for your opinion on things. 183.177.48.166 (talk) 01:21, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The name of Kanye West's father, Ray West, does not appear in the infobox. Only his mother appears. I suggest, therefore, that you add Ray West to the infobox under the relation of father. Jnotl (talk) 14:56, 29 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

As per Wikipedia policy, this should only be included if the article's subject (Kanye West) has one father who is either independently notable or particularly relevant - can you prove one of those? MadGuy7023 (talk) 20:09, 29 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't paragraph from Early Life: His father, Ray West, is a former Black Panther and was one of the first black photojournalists at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Ray later became a Christian counselor, and in 2006, opened the Good Water Store and Café in Lexington Park, Maryland, with startup capital from his son. not enough for his father's notability? Bunnypranav (talk) 06:17, 1 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure what you're implying. Notable people's fathers often have their own short biographies featured in early life sections. To prove notability, you'd have to demonstrate that Ray West meets WP:GNG. Throast {{ping}} me! (talk | contribs) 08:00, 1 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
WP:GNG is about independent articles. Why don't we just add it to the infobox? It seems relevant to readers. Professor Penguino (talk) 08:53, 2 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Relevant to two readers. Read MadGuy7023's reply again. Parents are added to the infobox if they are "independently notable" (i.e. meet GNG) or are "particularly relevant". A quote from the early life section isn't enough to establish either. Throast {{ping}} me! (talk | contribs) 10:39, 2 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Gotcha. Professor Penguino (talk) 03:44, 3 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
At the end of the 'Follow God' music video posted by Kanye, he declares his father his 'Best Friend.' I'm just a dummy, but I would think Kanye's Best friend and father would be relevant. Auggets (talk) 11:56, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Racist Antisemite

[edit]

Kanye West MUST labeled a racist anti semite at the beginning of the post. 2601:246:5601:CA20:ED79:FF42:A7B9:B96 (talk) 04:03, 29 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

That wouldn't be very neutral. Babysharkboss2!! (Trout me, pull the trigger.) 14:11, 1 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
not neutral, you clearly have some sort of agenda if you want it at the very beginning of the article. 108.27.60.251 (talk) 19:41, 6 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I would argue that Ye is literally just racist and its not an agenda. Just like how Hitler would be called racist and you aren't following an agenda for saying that. 2403:5817:9937:0:4DD0:3150:36E9:6A11 (talk) 07:45, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

No mention of his father at all in the summary section at the top right?

[edit]

Considering he has talked about how his father inspires him in interviews and the like it seems a bit peculiar to leave him out. 82.42.84.252 (talk) 21:41, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

In the lead, there is this paragraph: “West has also released the collaborative albums Watch the Throne (2011) with Jay-Z, Kids See Ghosts (2018) with Kid Cudi, and Vultures 1 and Vultures 2 (2024) with Ty Dolla Sign. ”

I’d like to request to change the bolded ‘and’ with ‘as well as’, since the double ‘and’ makes the sentence unwieldy.

Album era

[edit]

is this really notable enough to include in the see also section? we don't need to add the link to that page to every artist during that era. 146.199.146.160 (talk) 10:45, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

"Ye" name in body text

[edit]

Question: Since Ye has legally changed his name from "Kanye Omari West" to "Ye", shouldn't the body of the article refer to him as "Ye" instead of "West"?

The title, Kanye West, fits Wikipedia's policy since it is a Commonly Recognized Name, so that should stay.

But in the body, isn't it customary to use the person's legal name? Cher, for example, another celebrity with only one name, is referred to in her article as "Cher" throughout, and not her former last name "Sarkisian".

Of course his birth name should be included in the lead, as outlined in "WP:CHANGEDNAME", but I don't understand the justification for continuing to use "West" to describe him in the rest of the article. If anyone can find Wikipedia policy to contradict the change to "Ye", please correct me. 70.166.197.98 (talk) 04:01, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This is a unique situation, thus policy is not totally clear on this. I discussed this with another editor here and did not reach a consensus. The comparison to Cher is not great imo because Cher is referred to by virtually all secondary sources by that name, whereas Kanye West is referred to by his new mononymous legal name by a minority of secondary sources; the vast majority still refer to him as Kanye West, so changing all subsequent uses to "Ye" feels forced and would probably confuse a lot of readers. Throast {{ping}} me! (talk | contribs) 17:31, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It wouldn’t confuse a lot of users if the page was also using his legal name, this whole situation is dumb Maninacoffin (talk) 02:50, 15 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

edit on ye fromly kanye west

[edit]

can you please change the photo of ye to the latest of him it the current one is 10 years ago. Kanye West at the Met Gala in 2019 2.png Jypian (talk) 04:52, 13 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

That image is very low-quality. Recency alone is not good enough of a reason to change an infobox image. Throast {{ping}} me! (talk | contribs) 14:23, 13 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
