1788
[edit]Birthdays, 1788: looks a bit suspect to me! Could someone who knows check? Ta.
Descriptions
[edit]Why do people keep simplifying and simplifying the explanations next to peoples' names? It seems all that will be allowed is nationality and profession. No details about why you should care about this person are left. Shall we cut to the chase and replace all entries as with the following?
- 1959 - Paul Hester, Human being.
- 1960 - Igor Kurchatov, Human being.
- 1961 - Calvin Smith, Human being.
- 1966 - Andrew Wood, Human being.
- 1967 - Michelle Forbes, Human being.
- 1969 - R. Kelly, Human being.
- 1971 - Jason Giambi, Human being.
I think the appeal of these pages is that you can glance through and see what interesting people were born or died on a particular day. If we strip away any indication of what makes the interesting, what's the point? I'd very much like to revert all the recent changes toward this trend. Is there some guideline this would break? Sadangel 03:26, 30 July 2005 (UTC)
I dunno, buddy. Can we conclusively say that R. Kelly is a Human Being? Aren't you being a bit fast and loose with your definitions, there? -LE, poster.
Stamps
[edit]2006 - The price of a postage stamp in the United States increases to 39 cents.
I don't think this merits inclusion. Unless having it can be justified I'll remove it in due course. Arcturus 21:51, 8 January 2006 (UTC)
- I took the bold initiative of removing it. Kingturtle 23:39, 8 January 2006 (UTC)
- I dunno... for some reason, the price of postage stamps are always put into school yearbooks....~Sushi 05:00, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
Jeremy Wade Delle event
[edit]"1991 - Jeremy Wade Delle, a 15-year-old sophomore who had recently transferred to Richardson High School, killed himself with a .357 Magnum in front of his second-period English class."
Other than being a tragic event and the subject of the Pearl Jam song, is this significant enough to warrant an entry? Thanks -- Borameer ™ 17:23, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
Luna 21
[edit]This page says it launched in 1977, the Luna 21 page says it launched in 1973. Which one's right? CR7 22:59, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Bush 41
[edit]- Following moved from my talk page. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 14:58, 8 October 2007 (UTC)
Do you have a reason for this revert? This is a notable event when George H. W. Bush vomited on the prime minister of Japan on January 8, 1992. It is not vandalism. NHRHS2010 Talk 02:57, 7 October 2007 (UTC)
- It is not a globally notable event that will have any affect on the rest of the world for years to come. It is an interesting, newsworthy fact, but nothing else. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 02:59, 7 October 2007 (UTC)
- Well, this event shows up in the 1992 article. And it is well known. NHRHS2010 Talk 03:00, 7 October 2007 (UTC)
- Well known and published elsewhere doesn't make it notable enough for inclusion on a Wikicalendar article. This would fall in the same category as when Bill Clinton f'd up his knee at Greg Norman's house or when some other politician had a boil lanced from his ass. Not globally notable or impactful. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 03:04, 7 October 2007 (UTC)
- Then why is George HW Bush vomiting on the Japan Prime Minister event, staying in 1992 but not January 8? NHRHS2010 Talk 03:06, 7 October 2007 (UTC)
- To begin, my usual response to such questions is that I can't fix everything. Also, I don't watch the year articles. Further, common practice has been to allow the more trivial items to remain on the year articles - and often consensus in disputed cases usually concedes that those disputed items are allowed to stay on year articles and not day articles. IMO it shouldn't be in either place, but my focus is on the date articles. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 03:11, 7 October 2007 (UTC)

Commonwealth day
[edit]Commonwealth Day is the annual celebration of the Commonwealth of Nations held on the second Monday in March - now is it Jan 8 or second Monday in March? 85.228.104.238 (talk) 15:42, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
Introduction
[edit]The word eight should be eighth.
- Correct. Thanks. Quis separabit? 16:39, 8 January 2016 (UTC)
Typo
[edit]NOTE: "January 8 is the eight day of the year" SHOULD BE "January 8 is the eighth day of the year". Quis separabit? 16:44, 8 January 2016 (UTC)
- @Rms125a@hotmail.com: Just take a look at the templates being used. I noticed that one of them is
{{Day}}
, so I examined it to find the problem, correcting it here upon finding said problem. Dustin (talk) 03:12, 9 January 2016 (UTC) - Don't think an RfC was required for this but looks like the issue has been resolved. Safe to assume we can close this RfC early. Meatsgains (talk) 03:10, 13 January 2016 (UTC)
- yep. ;) --Mondiad (talk) 00:34, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
- I closed it, by way of simply removal of the RfC notice. This was not a proper RfC. Even a normal talk page discussion is not needed for trivial corrections of this sort. — SMcCandlish ☺ ☏ ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ᴥⱷʌ≼ 12:47, 16 January 2016 (UTC)
- @Dustin V.S., @Meatsgains -- sorry guys -- I didn't know how to fix it. {{tlx|Day}} is a little above my pay grade. I am kind of a technological Luddite. Thanks, y'all. Quis separabit? 02:16, 17 January 2016 (UTC)
Whiddy Island Disaster
[edit]From the Wikipedia page on this:
The Whiddy Island disaster, also known as the Betelgeuse incident, occurred on 8 January 1979, at around 1:00 a.m., when the oil tanker Betelgeuse exploded in Bantry Bay, at the offshore jetty for the oil terminal at Whiddy Island, Ireland. The explosion was attributed to the failure of the ship's structure during an operation to discharge its cargo of oil. The tanker was owned by Total S.A., and the oil terminal was owned and operated by Gulf Oil. The explosion and resulting fire claimed the lives of 50 people (42 French nationals, 7 Irish nationals and 1 British national). Only 27 bodies were recovered. A further fatality occurred during the salvage operation with the loss of a Dutch diver.
Is this a significant enough event to be included?

Kim Jong-Un's birthday?
[edit]Months ago, I changed Kim Jong-un's year of birth in this article to 1984 when evidence came out saying so (read the article on him), but now there is evidence from his Swiss school records saying he might have not been born on January 8. Should I put a footnote describing this issue?

Belarus vs. Bulgaria
[edit]The article on Babinden says it is a traditional Bulgarian observance apparently also observed in Russia. But this list of observances for January_8#Holidays_and_observances January 8 says it is observed in Belarus and Russia, and doesn't mention Bulgaria. It's probable that it's Bulgaria or Belarus, but could be both (and *if* both, then probably in Ukraine, too). --Haruo (talk) 19:29, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
